Winkler Extraction and Pitfall Traps Method Mahon: A Novel Approach to Assessing Ant Species Composition

Ants are one of the most diverse and abundant groups of insects, with over 12,000 known species worldwide. However, their composition and diversity can be affected by various factors such as habitat destruction, fragmentation, and degradation. To better understand ant species composition and its relationship with environmental factors, a new statistical approach using Winkler extraction and pitfall traps method Mahon was employed.

The study, published in Ants: Standard methods for measuring and monitoring biodiversity, aimed to compare the effectiveness of two sampling methods - Winkler extraction and pitfall trapping - for assessing ant species composition. The researchers used a combination of both methods to collect ants from six plots in oak-dominated mixed forests during 1995-1997.

The results showed that pitfall traps caught significantly more ant species per plot than did bait traps, with a total of 31 species collected compared to 29 species found in bait traps. Moreover, the ant species diversity obtained from pitfall traps was higher than that from bait traps. The study also found that pitfall traps provided a good estimation of ant species richness under the conditions of this study.

In contrast, bait traps took a much longer time to complete an estimate of species richness than did pitfall traps and added little information to pitfall trapping results. Additionally, bait traps missed three species collected with pitfall traps but attracted one species not found in pitfall traps.

The comparison of pitfall traps with bait traps for sampling leaf litter ants showed differences in species richness, relative abundance, diversity, and species accumulation curves. The study highlights the importance of using a combination of sampling methods to gain a comprehensive understanding of ant species composition and its relationship with environmental factors.
