As I reflect on my life, I am reminded of the desolate and discouraging surroundings that were a part of my early years. Born near a crossroads post office called Hale's Ford in 1858 or 1859, I grew up on a plantation in Franklin County, Virginia, where slaves lived in cabins. My birthplace was not exactly pinpointed, but I am certain that it was somewhere in the midst of those miserable surroundings.

Growing up as a slave was a daunting task. I remember the plantation and the slave quarters, which were often filled with sadness and hardship. Despite these challenges, I have been blessed to have had the opportunity to share my story with others.
